What is ANPR

Do You Need It: Number Plate Recognition Camera?

If you’ve seen the term ANPR floating around in camera spec sheets or security quotes, it’s worth understanding properly before you decide whether it’s actually worth paying for on your site. Here’s what it is, how it works, and who genuinely benefits from it.

What ANPR Actually Means

ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition. It’s a specific type of camera technology that reads vehicle number plates automatically and converts them into text data, rather than just capturing footage of a car driving past.

The important distinction here is between a camera that simply records a vehicle, and one that actually recognises the plate and logs it. A standard CCTV camera might capture a car on video, but you’d need to manually scrub through footage and squint at a frame to read the plate yourself. An ANPR camera does that reading automatically, in real time, and stores the result as searchable data.

How It Actually Works

ANPR cameras are purpose built for the job, not just a regular camera with software bolted on. They typically use a combination of infrared illumination and a specialised lens designed specifically to capture plates clearly, even at night, in poor weather, or when a vehicle is moving at speed.

Once the camera captures a clear image of the plate, onboard software reads the characters and converts them into text. That text can then be checked against a list, whether that’s an allow list for a gated property, a blacklist for banned vehicles, or simply logged for a time and date record of every vehicle that entered or left a site.

Where ANPR Genuinely Earns Its Keep

Gated communities and car parks. ANPR can automatically open a gate or boom gate for a recognised vehicle without anyone needing a swipe card or remote, while logging every vehicle that comes and goes.

Multi site businesses tracking deliveries. If you need to know exactly when a specific truck or vehicle arrived and left across several locations, ANPR gives you a searchable, automatic record instead of manually checking footage.

Sites with a genuine security or access concern. For car parks, warehouses, or gated estates where controlling and logging vehicle access actually matters, ANPR turns “we have some footage of the car park” into “we have an exact, searchable log of every vehicle on site and when.”

Traffic and enforcement style monitoring. Some sites use ANPR to catch and flag vehicles that shouldn’t be there, or to monitor traffic flow patterns over time.

Brand Details

  • Hikvision — the world’s largest video surveillance manufacturer, with the broadest product ecosystem: CCTV, access control, intercoms, alarms, and even commercial displays, all under one brand. If a job needs multiple categories to come from a single manufacturer, Hikvision’s range is hard to match for breadth.
  • Dahua — a major global manufacturer in its own right, historically strong on price-to-performance and with a genuinely broad analogue-to-IP range, useful on jobs that still need to bridge older coaxial cabling with new IP hardware.
  • HiLook — not a separate manufacturer, but Hikvision’s own value sub-brand. Choosing HiLook means Hikvision-grade core technology at a lower price, with a narrower category range (primarily CCTV, with some alarm and intercom options) than the full Hikvision lineup.

Where It's Probably Overkill

A standard home or small retail site. If you just want to see who’s coming and going, a good quality standard camera with AI human and vehicle detection covers that need without the added cost of purpose built ANPR hardware.

Sites without a genuine vehicle access problem. ANPR solves a specific problem, knowing exactly which vehicles came and went. If that’s not actually a problem you have, it’s an added expense that isn’t earning its keep.

Very low vehicle traffic sites. The value of ANPR scales with how much vehicle activity you’re actually trying to track. A driveway with one or two cars a day doesn’t need the same solution as a busy multi tenant car park.

What To Actually Ask Yourself

Before deciding on ANPR, it’s worth asking a few honest questions. Do you actually need to know which specific vehicles are on site, or is general video coverage enough? Is vehicle access something you need to control automatically, like a gate opening for approved plates, or just something you’d like recorded? And how much vehicle traffic are you actually dealing with, since that changes how much value the automation genuinely adds.

If the honest answer to most of those is “not really,” a well specified standard camera with vehicle detection will likely do the job for a fraction of the cost. If vehicle access and tracking is a real, ongoing part of how the site operates, ANPR earns its place quickly.

What To Actually Ask Yourself

ANPR cameras need to be specified correctly for the job, positioning, lens choice, and lighting all affect whether a system actually reads plates reliably or just looks impressive on paper. If you’re not sure whether your site genuinely needs ANPR or just good general coverage, that’s exactly the kind of question worth asking before you buy anything, not after.
